Friends, I am almost in my last stage of my 3 months OPT
period with no job offer yet. I
desperately needed to make sure the
initial total OPT period for Engineering students. Is it 3 months + 2 months= 5
months ?
If I join a college in my OPT period now, there will be
legal complexities to come back to get a job. That's the problem with the new OPT rule.
I wonder if there is anybody without job in OPT in Civil
Engineering like me ? I attended few telephone interviews and a couple of face
to face interviews. I am confused it is
the ECONOMY or MYSELF behind this situation !
I appreciate your comment(s)

an internship job or even a volunteer job can save your status. Try doing that. Consult local counties, cities or so on and offer them your service where your intention is not to earn money but to learn few things. Good Luck.

I believe the initial OPT period of 3 months is same for every major. those with STEM major can extend the OPT period after 12 months. However, one has to be working during OPT period. During the initial 12 months, one can not stay unemployed more than 90 days and the work has to be related to his/her field of study. It can be internship but has to be paid. one can work volunteerly to save status during the first 3 months but it has to be paid after that if i am not wrong.
you can not take grace period of 60 days after 90 days, however, i strongly suggest you to consult your international office as OPT rule has changed recently.
